Part-time Internship - Hering Consulting (Unpaid)

Organization: Hering Consulting, Inc., Minneapolis, MN

Organization Project Summary: Hering Consulting is launching a pilot e-Learning Catholic Theology support program aimed at helping to prepare those about to receive the sacrament of Confirmation; it is also valuable in the first year period after the sacrament. The program audience includes teens generally in high school (9th and 10th grade level) as well as adults of any age (often twenty to thirty-something) in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Program.

Individual lessons are currently piloted as narrated auto-play PowerPoint shows. They are then converted with Impatica for PowerPoint software to allow them to stream over the internet. PowerPoint allows for quick changes during the pilot phase and different technology will likely be used in the final version. (Impatica knowledge is not required.)

Web Site: www.basicdeepstuff.com (under construction)

Job Title: Graphic Artist – Interface or Presentation Design

Number of Openings: Dependant on availability of Interns to meet deadlines

Work Location: Telecommute / Home Office / School Computer Lab

Position Detail and Initial Process Proposal:
The role of the internship is to graphically interpret each lesson in a creative representation that remains faithful to and is appropriate for Catholic teaching
Most lessons range in length from 6 to 9 minutes each, and currently exist in script-mode which only presents text to the viewer. For each lesson the graphic artist needs to interpret the narrated script in an engaging manor that adds example value while not distracting from the message.

While other options may be realistic for the future final version and future approach recommendations are appreciated the present plan is to use creativity, stock photography and PhotoShop software to create custom relevant images along with text and necessary custom graphics to depict the lesson content using PowerPoint’s Custom Animation capabilities.

Two lessons as samples have already been interpreted in this manor and are available for your review that may be considered as a storyboard possibility. The Graphic Arts Intern needs to be able to deliver quality that exceeds these examples to achieve a presentation that is up to current acceptable commercial standards and expectations of the target market.

It is appreciated if the individual can express a vision of excellence for the future of this project while constraining themselves to the current software and deadline limitations. This delivery must be marketable and will become a proof of concept that positions this project for a final professional product launch.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
review the samples as a baseline and the assigned text based lesson
casually survey associates/ friends in the category range (What works/fails?)
plan and propose a commercially acceptable concept
select and download appropriate photographic images (iStockPhoto.com/Other)
present your proposed design, layout, & execution plan for approval
size the approved images appropriately for acceptable on screen visual appearance while making them as efficient as possible for web streaming transfer speed
Do the Custom Animation in PowerPoint. Fine tune and adapt the timing for the most engaging depiction of the scripted message being sensitive to enhancing the learning process without distracting from the content
After conversion for web-streaming fine tuning will be required

Experience and Qualification Requirement:
Mid to Advanced PowerPoint including Custom Animation
Mid to Advanced skill level PhotoShop or equivalent software
Capable of consistent artistic vision
Able to negotiate and meet assigned deadlines

SCSU Professional Panel Notes

For those of you who missed the professional panel here are some important tips/notes that I want to pass on to you!!

Career Fairs
Go to career fairs!!! Make sure you go up to the employers you're interested in - explain the job position you'd like to apply for and explain the qualities you have that you believe fit well for the job position - similar to "Elevator Pitch". Then ask, can you tell me more about the position?

Amy from Target said if a student uses this approach, by the end she will be trying to convince YOU to interview with her, instead of the other way around :)

Interview Tips:

DON'T: When asking your interviewer questions about the company you want to work for - don't ask anything you can find simply by using google.

DO: It helps to ask your interviewer questions about their own work or own experiences at the company - get them talking about themselves!

DO: Have in mind 7 stories/experiences/situations that helped make you the person you are - answer them like this - 10% on situation, 80% Action/Behavior and 10% Result/Overview

Interested in Crisis Communications?

I don't know about you, but I love reading up on crisis communications. I think it is a learning opportunity for everyone in PR - especially if the crisis is handled well by a pr specialist.

PRSA has a great article

I hope you'll enjoy reading this!

BrandWeek Article - Stay up on the news!

BrandWeek's Stacy Straczynski just wrote an article about how Gender and Behavior Influence Teen Buying. Teens were put into 11 categories, including "young metrosexuals" and "jockettes".
Check it out if you're interested http://bit.ly/2OxL1 - very cool article!

Interview Tip: Please keep in mind that it is important to stay up to date on current news and events in our career field. It also can't hurt to study different markets out there.

In PR and Marketing, many interviewers are impressed to see that students are keeping up to date on the news. It also helps if a student reads a couple of news sources religiously, especially if they read certain journalists on a day to day basis! This will impress your interviewer.

MY RECOMMENDATION: Start today - it is never too late. Subscribe to the trib online or in print - http://bit.ly/7Zvou

It also helps to get some national news, try USA Today - http://bit.ly/1c820

or The New York Times - http://bit.ly/1wvsy

MN Headhunter - So Tell Me About Yourself (STOP! It's A Trick Question)

Check out the MN Headhunter blog on a regular basis - http://www.mnheadhunter.com/mh/- the blog offers very valuable information about interviews, resumes, etc for a job search. Subscribe to its RSS Feed or follow him on twitter.

The latest blog - http://www.mnheadhunter.com/mh/2009/09/so-tell-me-about-yourself---stop-its-a-trick-question.html- shows how a job searcher should answer the question "Tell me about yourself" in an interview.

Most important information in the blog:

"I once had an interviewer start of with the ‘So tell me’ question. Knowing what I know, I kept it strictly professional. I said I graduated from XYZ University with a Bachelors of Science in Communications and started my career in Recruiting with a National Staffing Agency, I progressed through the ranks, then moved on to a better opportunity with ABC Corp. I have been with them 6 years and am now seeking a more challenging role as the Human Resources Manager for LMN Inc. See how I kept it purely about my career progression? This is the proper way to answer the question."

If you like this post and would like me to keep posting questions and their answers, please comment!
